Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan recently called out J.K. Rowling following her reaction to the UK Supreme Court's ruling on trans women's rights.
The Harry Potter author, who is notoriously an anti-trans advocate, is back in the headlines recently as she celebrated the recent court ruling in the UK regarding the definition of "women."
Nicola Coughlan Calls Out J.K. Rowling Over Support on UK Supreme Court's Ruling
In her recent post on Instagram Story, Coughlan shared an article titled "This Is a New Low for J.K. Rowling," which discussed the famed author's celebration of the UK Supreme Court's ruling regarding the rights of trans women.
The ruling declared that a "woman" is legally defined by biological sex, which would mean that trans women are excluded.
The Bridgerton star wrote in the caption, "Keep your new Harry Potter lads. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole." This is in relation to the HBO TV series adaptation that is currently in the works.
Later on, she posted a video expressing her disappointment with the court ruling and announcing that she is starting a fundraiser for Not A Phase, a charity that supports the trans community in the UK.
"To see an already-marginalized community to be further attacked in law is really stomach-turning and disgusting, and these people celebrating it [are] more stomach-turning and disgusting," Coughlan said in the video.
"If you are a cisgender person who is an ally of a trans person, I think now is the time to just speak up and make your voice heard, and let your trans, nonbinary friends and just the community at large know that you’re there for them and will keep fighting for them."
While the goal was initially set at around £10,000, Coughlan managed to raise nearly £100,000 in a short amount of time.
The Backlash Against J.K. Rowling
Rowling has been receiving a lot of backlash for the last few years over her anti-trans views.
As a result, the main trio stars of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint) have expressed their support for the trans community and condemned Rowling's stance on the trans community.
"To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you," Radcliffe wrote in an essay for the Trevor Project.
Despite her controversial views, Rowling remains active in the industry as she is currently involved in the development of HBO's Harry Potter series.
