Last year, Disney decided to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn over insensitive and inappropriate tweets that the filmmaker made fourteen years in the past. The move sparked controversy and outrage, leaving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in uncertainty. Dave Bautista was one of Gunn's most vocal supporters during the time, and the Marvel star expressed disinterest in appearing in the third Guardians of the Galaxy film without Gunn to helm the project.
Soon after he was fired, Gunn was taken in by DC to helm the second Suicide Squad movie, and many expected Bautista to follow the director there. However, it seems like this wasn't the case.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Bautista admits that he never planned to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe to work on Suicide Squad. He just didn't want to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without Gunn.
"No, it wasn't that I was going to jump ship and do Suicide Squad," Bautista reveals in his interview with the entertainment news outlet, "I was more at the point where I was like, 'Fire me. I don't care. You're going to hear what I have to say.' And this is the way I feel and I think you made a bad call and I don't care if you fire me because I feel this way. This is me being honest and me sticking up for my friend who was wronged.'"
According to the actor, he had no intention of threatening Marvel to go do Suicide Squad 2. He just wanted to stick out for his friend.
Thankfully, Disney has rehired Gunn. Now, Bautista won't have to worry about whether or not he'll have to stay with Marvel.
Avengers: Endgame is currently screening in cinemas.
