According to reports from Deadline and Variety, former WWE champion and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is currently in discussions to step into the boots of Kratos, replacing Ryan Hurst as the iconic Ghost of Sparta.

Hurst, best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, had been filming in Vancouver for several months and reportedly completed four episodes after putting on 40 pounds of muscle for the physical transformation. However, production ground to a sudden halt in late June after Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear during an on-set stunt. The injury required surgery and a lengthy four-to-six-month recovery period, making it impossible to keep him in the lead without delaying the multi-million dollar project well into 2027.

Faced with a massive delay, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television made the tough decision to recast the role and reshoot Hurst’s completed scenes, with Dave Bautista eyed for the role. Beyond his WWE pedigree and action resume—including recent physical roles in the upcoming Highlander reboot—sources note that Bautista’s natural stature makes him an ideal candidate to take over quickly without needing months of physical conditioning.

If negotiations wrap up smoothly, prep is scheduled to pick back up in August, aiming for production to resume in mid-October with Callum Vinson remaining onboard as Atreus. Neither Amazon nor Sony has publicly commented on the casting discussions so far.

Kratos isn't the only being recast, as Prime Video is using this opportunity to seemingly overhaul the entire series' cast.
