We all have our own opinions about Luca Guadagnino's remake on the Giallo classic Suspiria. Interestingly, Dario Argento has some pretty strong words about the Dakota Johnson horror flick.
Argento recently spoke to Radio Rai 1's Un Giorno da Pecora about the remake (via Indie for Bunnies). The director of the original film admitted that he wasn't pleased with what he saw.
"It did not excite me, it betrayed the spirit of the original film: there is no fear, there is no music. The film has not satisfied me so much," Argento revealed.
The original movie certainly was a visual feast with its vibrant colors and hypnotic scoring courtesy of the band Goblin. Although the remake tried its best, it was still a world apart from Argento's film.
Argento might not be a fan of the Suspiria remake but he has a lot of respect for Guadagnino's work. He called the Call Me By Your Name director "a fine person" and complimented the remake's set design by saying it has "beautiful tables, beautiful curtains, beautiful dishes, all beautiful."
It might not be as stunning as the original but the Suspiria remake still had its moments. For instance, the mirror room scene where Olga (Elena Fokina) is horrifically injured by the dance moves performed by Susie (Johnson) in the other room was instantly iconic. You can watch how the sequence was achieved in the video below.
Argento is currently working on a new film although he is still struggling with its title. Hopefully, we'll get an update from the horror genius in the near future.
