Batman Returns star Danny DeVito admitted in a recent interview that he thought Michelle Pfeiffer was a “goddess” whom he used to “lust after.”
DeVito and Pfeiffer played the antagonists in the 1992 superhero film and starred alongside Michael Keaton.
What Did Danny DeVito Admit About Michelle Pfeiffer on the Batman Returns Set?
DannyDanny DeVito plays the sociopathic and ruthless Penguin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, but admitted that working with Michelle Pfeiffer back then made him uncharacteristically awkward.
He told The Penguin star Colin Farrell during Variety’s Actors on Actors series that their Catwoman, Pfeiffer, was a "goddess."
“If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day…” DeVito said, prompting Farrell to ask if he had brushed his teeth earlier that day.
The 80-year-old responded, “I got all flushed. Put extra makeup on. ‘Give me another pound of makeup.’ It was very difficult.”
Farrell, who also played the iconic villain in The Batman and the HBO series The Penguin, asked DeVito what it was like to work with the Scarface star.
"Just so wonderful. And I lusted after her."
However, he quickly clarified that it was the Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot, who was lusting after the actress.
Farrell then joked, "Was she nervous working with you? Did she call security? Did she say, 'Tell him to stop stirring the sauce'?"
The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor noted he felt that Pfeiffer, now 67, actually liked his character.
Meanwhile, Pfeiffer surprised fans last year by sharing her ageless, radiant, and, most importantly, makeup-free look on Instagram while welcoming spring.
What Does Danny DeVito Think About Method Acting?
Considering DeVito portrayed a sadistic and perverse villain, Farrell was perhaps curious about what the comedian thinks of method acting.
DeVito expressed how much he loved playing the Penguin because of the theatrics of it all. He enjoyed bursting out freely, acting like a mad deviant, and being in "Oswald’s realm."
"You can go off the rails with something. The operatic element of Tim Burton’s Batman Returns was my favorite thing about it — the music, the sets, the whole thing. The Shakespeare of it," he explained.
However, method acting, or taking the character’s persona home, is something he could not get behind.
"I go home to Rhea [Perlman] and the kids," DeVito stated, referring to the woman he married in 1982 and with whom he had three children. They are now separated, but not divorced.
"I’ve played some really despicable characters; you’ve got to shed that."
DeVito returns in the 17th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He stars as Frank, another "despicable" character who often acts as the instigator behind the group’s vile antics. The new season will begin airing July 9 on FXX.
