Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to be a completely new story set in the Cyberpunk Universe but it looks like the anime has a cool and interesting connection to the videogame. It has just been pointed out that the protagonist of the series has somehow introduced in Cyberpunk 2077, which was released two years before the anime!
We recently got the first teaser for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which introduced David Martinez, "a street kid from Santo Domingo raised with an Arasaka education. Personal tragedy leads him to installing a powerful implant that propels him into the dangerous world of cyberpunks." The teaser features a lot of the character who is set to be the lead protagonist in the anime.
It's not a unique name but a fan was quick to point out that Cyberpunk 2077 has a drink called The David Martinez which reduces movement and weapon accuracy. Interesting, the anime's official Twitter account was quick to respond to the tweet.
It's great to know that Cyberpunk 2077 had already teased what's coming in the future. With a drink named after him, there is little doubt that David Martinez will make a mark in the Cyberpunk Universe.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners "follows a street kid trying to survive in a tech and body mod-obsessed city of the future. With everything to lose, he chooses to become an edgerunner, a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk."
The upcoming anime is a spin-off of Cyberpunk 2077 that is being produced by CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger. Hiroyuki Imaishi will direct the series along with assistant director Masahiko Otsuka, creative director Hiromi Wakabayashi, character designer Yoh Yoshinari, and Yuto Kaneko. The screenplay is being written by Yoshiki Usa and Masahiko Otsuka while Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka is composing the original score.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will consist of 10 episodes and will premiere on Netflix in September 2022.
