Channing Tatum has finally addressed his surprise appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine for the first time since the film's release.
As many fans know, the beloved actor was supposed to play the fan-favorite mutant in a Fox-produced solo project. However, the plans fell through when Disney acquired Fox and the rights to the X-Men went back to Marvel Studios.
For years, fans believed that they would never get to see Tatum as Gambit on screen. Thankfully, it all changed with Deadpool & Wolverine as he managed to finally play the character and it was one of the surprise appearances that the film was keeping under wraps.
Channing Tatum Addresses Gambit Appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine
In his recent post on Instagram, Tatum addressed his surprise appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine and reflected on his long journey to finally play the character on screen.
He posted photos of himself with Ryan Reynolds in 2015 when the solo project was first announced and one that was taken last week when they both showed up in the film's special panel in San Diego Comic-Con Hall H.
"These pictures are almost 10 years apart to the day. I sat in the audience when Ryan showed his first peek of Deadpool 1 to the world and I think I ran back stage right after and found him and I think I just hugged him and was like holy shit you did it man. It’s perfect," the actor wrote in his caption.
"I didn’t know him really at all back then. But since then I can say that there is almost no one that has had my back in this industry more than Ryan."
Tatum thanked Reynolds for bringing him on board the film and allowing him to finally play Gambit.
"I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But he fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy," he continued.
"Shawn Levy as well. Truly such a brilliant creator on every single level. All things happen for a reason. I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater. LFG!!"
It was great to see that Tatum was finally able to play Gambit since the actor has been wanting to portray the character for many years and he thought that he wouldn't ever be given a chance.
He also had decent screen time as the character and was able to become badass with the action-packed moments that he had to do. While it remains to be seen whether this could lead to more appearances, at the very least, we were finally able to get a glimpse of his take on the role.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now showing in theaters everywhere.
