- Quick Answer: Mike Flanagan's Carrie TV series expands King's original novel by connecting Carrie to a broader legacy of telekinetic women, breaking out into uncharted territory.
Mike Flanagan has revealed the biggest change he made in his TV adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Carrie.
Released on October 7 on Prime Video, the series offers a modern take on the meek and socially awkward Carietta White (Summer H. Howell) as she navigates school life in the age of social media.
As this version differs significantly from King’s original story, how does Flanagan change Carrie?
How Does Mike Flanagan Reimagine Carrie?

Adapting Carrie for TV for the first time, Mike Flanagan has a chance to explore Carrie’s story like never before.
Sure, her story has been told on the big screen a couple of times, from Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 feature film to Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake, but both stick to Stephen King’s original narrative.
With an eight-episode format, Flanagan admitted to making some big changes to the original text.
“It was kind of right at the beginning,” he told ComicBook. “It was one of the first things I kind of baked into the pitch for it – and to Stephen King as well – was: The book talks about Carrie’s legacy as part of this kind of sorority of gifted women that goes way back through history.”
In the original story, Carrie dies without knowing there are other people like her. So Flanagan takes this opportunity to explore this side of the story, introducing more characters and perspectives instead of focusing solely on the lead character's bullying, telekinetic powers, and tragic fate.
“But she never lives long enough to understand that she’s not alone, and to see her place in that. And we had a chance here to completely open that up and to bring that into it,” the series creator continued. “And that was one of the biggest things I was excited about from the jump was it wasn’t just Carrie. That we can really see that world.”
Flanagan also cited Michael and Shawn Piller’s 2002 TV adaptation of King’s The Dead Zone, in which creators took a different approach by turning the story into a weekly paranormal investigation procedural that lasted for six seasons.
“I was thinking a lot about how they adapted The Dead Zone for television, which is something I thought was really, really, really well done,” he explained. “That it’s like, this is a character who is just brimming with potential… Let’s go there with her. Let’s break out into uncharted territory.”
What Is Mike Flanagan’s Carrie About?

Mike Flanagan reimagines Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel, Carrie, for the modern digital era.
Here, Carrie White has finally come out of seclusion to attend high school following the death of her doomsday prepper father, Ralph (Tahmoh Penikett), while being looked after by her hyper-religious, overprotective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan).
But as she transitions into teenage life, Carrie eventually discovers her powerful telekinetic abilities.
Compared to the novel, the series updates the classic tragedy by exploring high school bullying in the age of social media, teenage anxieties, and smartphone culture.
Ultimately, the series offers a fresh take on King’s classic horror story while exploring how modern technology shapes Carrie’s struggles with isolation, identity, and acceptance.
All episodes of Carrie are now available to stream on Prime Video.
