Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have finally decided to explain why they decided to write the Skrulls the way they did in the movie.
Marvel fans were pretty surprised by the Skrull twist in Captain Marvel. Everyone was expecting the movie to introduce the Skrulls as villains, hopefully setting up the Secret Invasion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For the uninitiated, the 8-issue comic book series Secret Invasion has the Earth slowly being invaded by the Skrulls, a race of alien shapeshifters who have secretly replaced many, many heroes in the Marvel Universe. Fans were eager to see the Secret Invasion make its way to the MCU. However, Brie Larson's first standalone film changed the narrative, turning the Skrulls into the victims of the Kree.
Now that Captain Marvel's gotten its Blu-Ray home release (via ComicBook.com), we finally find out why the Skrulls were turned into the good guys. In the feature commentary from Boden and Fleck, the directors explain the shocking twist, saying that they wanted to turn the tables in the film.
"This is another one of those scenes, you know, besides the one you mentioned before Ryan, the scene that we shot at dusk, that's kind of the heart of the movie to me," Boden said. "She kind of finds her humanity in that scene. Carol finds her humanity in that scene and we really see the humanity of the Skrulls in this scene and it's like these pointy-eared, weird-looking, shape-shifting aliens that we assumed were the villains for the first half of the film and to like open up our hearts and see that they have families and they care about the same things that we care about, that was one of the really exciting things about this movie us and Jonathan Schwartz and Kevin Feige and Lou (D'Esposito) and Victoria (Alonso) and Geneva (Robertson-Dworet) who we're writing with all got really excited about and really wanted to bring to this movie. Taking these Skrulls who're like the villains from the comics and being able to see another side of them, and then her reckoning with warring with these people who she didn't understand and was fighting on the wrong side of the war"
While it's definitely a shame that the Secret Invasion wasn't teased in the film, there's no knowing whether or not that might happen in future MCU films. Let's just wait and see.
