  • Quick Answer: Hulu cancelled the revival, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, after the pilot. Director Chloé Zhao cited creative differences and a priority to remain truthful to fans.

Recently, Sarah Michelle Gellar shocked fans with the breaking news: the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, New Sunnydale, has been scrapped by Hulu. The Scooby-Doo star's latest update comes after they had shot the plot, with the streamer pulling the plug on the reboot. The reboot director Chloé Zhao spoke about it below:

Speaking to Variety and CNN, the Academy Award-winning director said she was "not surprised" by Hulu's decision.

"I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah [Michelle Gellar], with all the cast and crew doing this. And we, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show," Zhao noted, adding that their priority for the revival was to be 'truthful to the show and to our fans'. "So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open, and we welcome the mystery. And what this might lead us to."

Zhao, who was nominated for best director for Hamnet, explained that the inspiration for her all-black outfit and veil was the crow, while seemingly alluding to the mystery of what may come for the future of the Buffy revival: "The crow. The power of taking and letting things die, so something new can come through."

While she clarified that the look was inspired by Hamnet, and not Buffy, the theme of mourning could resonate with both works.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer reportedly "remains high" on intellectual property as the Buffy brand remains active, so while it remains to be seen when the project could start things up again, as Zhao said, she holds hope that the future could save New Sunnydale, come what may.

It is worth mentioning that the outlet's source, who is "close to the show," indicated that the streamer could still consider "future iterations on the IP" while saying, "Basically, the door is still open."

"Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love [Buffy] and how much she means not only to me but to all of you," Gellar said in a video she posted via Instagram, "And this doesn't change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was first announced in February last year as a pilot order at Hulu. Zhao was set to direct and executive-produce the new iteration at 20th Television and Searchlight Television. Nora and Lila Zuckerman were attached to write and showrun, while original series creator Joss Whedon was not involved.

Apart from Gellar's reprisal of her titular role, the pilot also starred Armstrong, Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott.
