It’s official: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are returning as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn O’Connell for a long-awaited The Mummy reunion.

While Universal has yet to reveal The Mummy 4’s official plotline, it is expected to follow the events of Fraser and Weisz’s 2001 film, The Mummy Returns.

For context, Weisz did not return for 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Maria Bello taking over her role alongside Fraser.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Mummy reunion will likely ignore the third film, probably to give Weisz a smoother reentry into the story.

This suggests that another “back-from-the-dead” scenario may arise, allowing the fan-favorite adventurer and Egyptologist to return to action once again.

With the Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for Ready or Not, the Scream reboots, and Abigail, at the helm, fans can expect their signature blend of wit and genuine horror applied to the beloved franchise. David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, Orphan: First Kill) writes the screenplay.

So far, only Fraser and Weisz are confirmed to return for The Mummy 4.

"The one I wanted to make is forthcoming," Fraser told the Associated Press in November . "And I've been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It's time to give the fans what they want."

Weisz, on the other hand, never expected the franchise to remain popular with fans more than two decades after its release.

"It's beloved to me too. I feel very much the same. When we were making it, we had no idea – we didn't know if it was going to even sell tickets," she told Net-a-Porter. "Everybody in The Mummy was just brilliant, and it was just some alchemical thing in it, that it had charm, and charm is such a strange thing. It's either there or it isn't."

It remains to be seen if other original The Mummy stars, like Jonathan Hannah and Oded Fehr, will also return to reprise their roles as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan and Ardeth Bay, respectively. However, both actors have previously expressed interest in joining Fraser and Weisz for a new The Mummy movie if given the chance.

“That would be fun to do. It would be fun to hook up with everybody again,” Hannah told the Radio Times

By the looks of it, this isn’t far from happening, as the actor admitted he had spoken with Fraser, who wants to reunite the original cast.

"[Fraser] said that what they were looking to do was bring the original cast back together again,” he continued.

Sadly, unlike Hannah, Fehr revealed he hadn’t been contacted about a possible return for The Mummy reunion. But that doesn’t diminish his hope of being part of the sequel.

“I gotta tell you, man, I'm so excited that you're excited. I have no idea. I haven't been contacted. I don't know anything about it,” he told ScreenRant. “I know that the internet has been saying it as though it exists and it's a done deal, but haven't heard anything about it. So I'm hoping it happens. I'm hoping I get to be in it. But there's nothing I can tell you about it.”
