The long-awaited fourth Mummy movie is officially in the works, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz set to reprise their iconic roles.

Since Fraser's comeback a few years ago, fans have been hoping that it would lead to a new sequel to The Mummy with the Oscar-winning actor returning to his beloved role after two decades. The third installment, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was released in 2008 to tepid success, and no new sequel has been made since then.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Universal Pictures is officially bringing back The Mummy franchise as the fourth movie is currently in the works.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their iconic roles of Rick O'Connell and Evelyn O'Connell, respectively, from the previous films. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence are directing the installment.

David Coggeshall is working on the screenplay. The project is being described as a sequel, not a reboot. The events of the third film, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, will also be ignored. Weisz notably did not reprise her role in that installment, and she was replaced by Maria Bello.

There are no details yet on whether they will bring back either Freddie Boath or Luke Ford to play Rick and Evelyn's son, Alex O'Connell, in the fourth movie.

A lot of fans online have been excited by the news due to the nostalgia factor and the filmmakers involved in the installment. Fraser's career renaissance also paved the way for more people to clamor for a fourth movie.

What to Expect in The Mummy 4

So far, the plot details regarding the fourth Mummy movie are still under wraps, since the project remains in development and the script is still being written.

The Mummy Returns notably took place in early 1930s Egypt. Given that it's been 24 years since the film's release, we can safely guess that the upcoming film might take place around the 1950s, with Alex all grown up.

There are also no details yet on whether the other cast members from the previous films are also set to return.

For now, fans should wait for more news and updates regarding the project in the coming months, but it's great to hear that we have official confirmation that it is happening.
