Avengers: Endgame Opening Weekend Record Gets Hulk-Smashed by Detective Chinatown 3

It's no secret that Avengers: Endgame is one of the biggest blockbusters of the century as it broke several box office records in 2019. However, it looks like the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick has met its match in ... Detective Chinatown 3?

Back in 2019, Endgame dominated the single territory box office by bringing in a stunning US$357 million on its five-day opening weekend in North America. This made it the biggest opening weekend haul in a single market, at least until last weekend.

Amazingly, the sequel Detective Chinatown 3 took Chinese theaters by storm and brought in a jaw-dropping RMB 2.57 billion (US$393 million) since its premiere on February 12. This means that the third installment of the Detective Chinatown film series actually smashed Endgame's record by a whopping $36 million.

Interestingly, Detective Chinatown 3 actually broke two of Endgame's records. In addition to taking the biggest opening weekend record in a single territory, it holds the biggest opening weekend record in Chinese history.

Detective Chinatown 3 is directed by Chen Sicheng and stars Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran as two con artists who end up being detectives. In the film, they are invited to Tokyo where they find themselves in the middle of a battle between the strongest detectives in Asia.

Avengers: Endgame may have lost to Detective Chinatown 3 in one record but the MCU sequel can still boast about being the highest-grossing film of all time.

Detective Chinatown 3 is currently screening in theaters in China. It is still unclear if the movie will be released internationally.
