At last, the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer has finally arrived, providing fans with new footage after receiving several teasers at the start of the year. Why Does Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Have an Accent?
Right from the get-go, we can clearly hear that Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom will have an accent. The previous two big-screen adaptations of the character had a normal American accent, so this will be a hot question for anyone unfamiliar with the MCU's character origins (or the character's comic book origins too).
This new Doctor Doom comes from Earth-828, the same Earth where the new Fantastic Four are from. We know this thanks to the first post-credit scene shown at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, where we see the character at the tower with young Franklin.
First Steps also established that Earth-828 features the country of Latveria, as there was an empty seat for it in the United Nations scene. Latveria is a fictional European country in Marvel Comics and the birthplace of Victor Von Doom.
The MCU will follow a more traditional route when it comes to the character's origin, making him originate from said country. That is why Robert Downey Jr. features an Eastern European accent in the trailer - and the movie - reflecting his country of origin.
This will be a departure from Julian McMahon's version, who was from the United States, and Toby Kebbell's Doom in Fant4stic, who only had a subtle European undertone.
What Is Avengers: Doomsday About?
The movie is set to be a direct result of the events in Avengers: Endgame, with Marvel Studios releasing a new version of the movie with extra scenes to make that connection clearer.
Doctor Doom is presented as the major antagonist, but his motives remain unknown. Many rumors indicate that he is on a quest to avenge (or even bring back) his family. The new poster shows Doom in front of what looks like a portrait of a mother and a child, indicating exactly that.
