Avatar: The Way of Water has officially crossed the $2 billion mark at the box office and soon enough, the Avatar sequel is predicted to dominate the charts by overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War due to its theatrical run extension still in cinemas today.
Despite viewers having to wait over a decade for Avatar: The Way of Water’s release after the first Avatar film, the franchise has been gaining positive reviews and has nabbed rare theatrical extensions, which inevitably lands the film multiple awards. In this case, Avatar 2 has landed an Oscar Nomination at the 95th Academy Awards for Best Picture alongside Top Gun: Maverick.
The aforementioned titles were also nominated in the Best Picture - Drama category at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, however, both failed to win as Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans took their place.
James Cameron is not the only one who earned a box office milestone for having three billion-dollar grossing films in his career, but even Zoe Saldana, who played Neytiri in the Avatar franchise. Saldana makes history as the first actor to star in four films that crossed over $2 billion at the box office!
Now, whether Avatar: The Way of Water wins or not at the Oscars, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s also one of the rarest films to ever secure a China release while also gaining extension in its theatrical run! Upon its initial agreement to feature the film in theaters for 30 days, China renewed its contract by adding another 30 days due to its continued massive success.
With this, James Cameron has been working on the Avatar sequels, seeing as The Way of Water profit has also secured Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 films’ future.
Avatar: The Way of Water is still showing in cinemas worldwide. You can check out more details about it here.
