  • Key Update: Sam Worthington claims the Avatar franchise feels like an "independent movie" due to a lack of studio and fan-driven creative pressure compared to the MCU.

  • Quick Answer: Worthington attributes Avatar's success to James Cameron's risk-taking freedom, noting the franchise lacks the rigid schedules and intense community expectations typically found in Marvel production.

Avatar star Sam Worthington recently opened up about why filming on Pandora feels worlds away from the high-stakes stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite the multibillion-dollar scale of James Cameron's epic, Worthington describes that the set still feels like making an "independent" film rather than the endless pressure from studio deadlines.

In an interview with The Independent, Sam Worthington explained, "We're unlike Marvel movies, in the sense of, it feels like an independent movie when we make it. We don't have outside pressures, or expectations from the press, or the studio, or the community. It doesn't affect what we do. And that's why we can take more risks."

"It's not like we have to get scenes completed by today or the studio is going to be upset. We just play and create. People don't understand that," the actor added, while pushing back claims that Cameron is difficult to work with on his film sets, "They think it's this big, solid machine where Jim is the didactic director. And he's not. He's a painter."

It remains to be seen whether Avatar 4 will likely happen, considering the sizable drop in ticket sales from 2009's Avatar ($2.9 billion) and 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion), with Avatar: Fire and Ash earning less than expected with nearly $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

But as much as Worthington and Cameron enjoyed the liberty on set, the franchise creator will reportedly be focusing on a new project...

While Cameron spent nearly two decades on Pandora, his next focus is shifting to the 3D concert film, Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour, which he co-directed and is set to hit theaters on May 8, 2026.

Beyond that, according to Avatar franchise executive producer Rae Sanchini, last week with ScreenRant, Avatar 4 is not the next upcoming project to expect from James Cameron.

"[Fantastic Voyage has] been long in the works and we are moving forward and can't announce anything, but we are in the works coming up in very early stages," Sanchini explained to the outlet, "That's been kind of a dream project of ours for some time."

She noted, though, that while Avatar 4 is seemingly not Cameron's current priority, they're going to have to get started on that, as well: "And then the Avatar films are a very long lead time process, so we're going to have to get started on those pretty soon as well. And then Jim's got another few things that he's always kicking around. Sure. A lot of original ideas."

Cameron has been clear on not wanting to collaborate or "hand over" his Avatar films to another director without him, in fear of pushing it in a different direction from his vision. We'll have to wait between now and Avatar 4's initially announced December 21, 2029, release date. Stay tuned!
