Following the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters recently, fans are already looking forward to the fourth installment in James Cameron's epic science-fiction saga.

The Avatar franchise is planned to have five films in total, with two more installments scheduled for release in the next several years. After all, there is a lot more to explore in the world of Pandora and the Na'vi mythology that is part of Cameron's ambitious plan. Fire and Ash has also given clues on what we might see in the next two installments.

Let's explore everything we know so far about the upcoming fourth Avatar movie.

So far, the plot details regarding Avatar 4 are under wraps, as the project's production is still ongoing and incomplete as of this time.

In a previous interview, Cameron revealed that he already shot some parts of the fourth movie back during the filming of The Way of Water and Fire and Ash due to a time jump that will take place after the first act, and to avoid the issues where the younger actors age up between the movies.

"All the actors worked for 18 months. This isn't like rocking up to a lectern and in two days, doing an entire voice part for an animated film, Pixar animated film. Everything you see those characters do, the actors did. It took 18 months to do the two movies. So, about nine months of capture for each film," he explained.

"But it was intermixed. We'd do Avatar 2 scene one day, and a 3 scene the next day. Even some stuff on 4. 'Cause all the characters jumped forward in age about eight years between the end of 3 and start of 4."

Producer Jon Laundau also confirmed in a past interview that the next two installments will have parts of the story that take place on Earth.

"There's overpopulation and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder. But we don't want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going. The films are also about the idea of that we can change course," he said.

"There are good humans, and there are bad humans — the same thing on the Na'avi side — but oftentimes, people don't see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we're not aware of."

In a recent interview, Sigourney Weaver confirmed that her character, Kiri, will serve as the narrator for the fourth film.

Who is Returning in Avatar 4? Who is Joining the Cast?

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, David Thewlis, Cliff Curtis, CCH Pounder, Bailey Bass, Jack Champion, Giovanni Ribisi, and Jemaine Clement are all confirmed to reprise their roles from the previous films.

Michelle Yeoh is joining the cast to play a new human character named Dr. Karina Mogue. The details regarding whether she will be a hero or villain in the story are yet to be seen.

When is Avatar 4 Coming Out?

Avatar 4 is currently scheduled for release in theaters on December 21, 2029, meaning there will be a four-year wait before we'll be able to see the next installment.

However, Cameron has stated that if Fire and Ash ends up being a box office flop, he will likely end the franchise and walk away from making more movies.

"I’ve been in Avatar land for 20 years. Actually, 30 years because I wrote it in ‘95, but I wasn’t working continuously on it for those first 10 years. Yeah, absolutely, sure. If this is where it ends, cool," he said.

As for the open story threads, he responded, "There’s one open thread. I’ll write a book!"
