The Last Kingdom and Vikings: Valhalla are series on Netflix that follow stories of famous Vikings warriors and the Danes’ voyages to England.

The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, a 13-part historical novel series. On the other hand, Vikings: Valhalla is based on historical accounts, specifically Viking mythology and sagas written by Norse historians.

Both series have similar character names and territories. Both deal with the conflict between the Christian and pagan beliefs. Because of these similarities, fans of historical dramas often get confused between The Last Kingdom, Vikings: Valhalla, and even its predecessor Vikings.

So, is The Last Kingdom related to Vikings: Valhalla? The answer is no, The Last Kingdom is not related to Vikings: Valhalla. They only have a lot of similarities.

While both series have their own Viking stories about what the Vikings did over a millennia ago, The Last Kingdom and Vikings: Valhalla are not connected and do not share the same universe.

While they may deal with similar stories which may show some connections, it is only because their settings are similar and that they use similar historical figures in their stories.

The Timeline of The Last Kingdom and Vikings: Valhalla

The Last Kingdom is set over 100 years before Vikings: Valhalla. The series is about Saxon and Dane (Viking) relationships beginning in 866AD. The Last Kingdom Season 5 concluded around 900AD.

On the other hand, Vikings: Valhalla is a sequel to Vikings (2013-2020) and takes place around 100 years after the original series concluded. Vikings: Valhalla is a spin-off series that opens in 1002 AD and intends to conclude with the end of the Viking Age, marked by the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 AD.

Do You Need to Watch Vikings: Valhalla to Understand The Last Kingdom?

No, you don’t need to watch both of them. Since these two series are not related and don’t share the same universe, there is no need to watch both to understand the stories of each. Furthermore, Uhtred of Bebbanburg/Uhtred Ragnarsson is a fictional character, thus, you won’t be hearing about him in Vikings: Valhalla. However, if you’re a fan of historical dramas and Viking stories, you may want to watch both of them.

Vikings: Valhalla will have a third season on Netflix, which is set to premiere in 2024. The Last Kingdom will have a movie Seven Kings Must Die, which is set to conclude the series.
