Angela Bassett recently reflected on her shocking Oscar loss in the 2023 ceremony to Jamie Lee Curtis.

The veteran actress received her second Oscar nomination for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, despite being heavily favored to win, it was Curtis who ended up prevailing for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In a recent interview, Bassett addressed losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Curtis in the 2023 ceremony.

The actress' stoic reaction when her name was not called went viral online as fans immediately took notice of her disappointing expression and when she didn't join the entire room in the standing ovation for Curtis.

"I found it interesting. Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving," she said. "I love applauding people. But in that moment…"

Bassett trailed off and talked about how she had thought she had put in the work to be recognized. Then, she corrected, "No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given."

In the weeks leading up to the Oscars ceremony, Bassett was considered to be one of the potential winners of the Best Supporting Actress category since she also won the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards for her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever performance.

Angela Bassett Receives Honorary Oscar The Following Year

Following her surprising Oscar loss, The Academy announced months later that Bassett would receive an Honorary Oscar award as recognition for her lifetime achievement in the film industry.

Some fans saw it as The Academy's opportunity to make up for her Oscar loss, but nevertheless, there is no doubt that Bassett has proven in her decades-long career that she is a terrific actress who is worthy of this kind of recognition.

"Thank you, thank you to the Academy and the Board of Governors for this award," Bassett said in her acceptance speech.

"I have considered acting my calling and not just my career. I do this work because I find it meaningful and I hope in some way that it makes a difference and has an impact. To be recognized in this way for what I love doing is truly wonderful and I am beyond grateful."
