Despite the huge divide between critics and fans, Alita: Battle Angel is doing well in the box office. The cyberpunk film from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron topped Valentine's Day box office last week, and it also dominated the worst President's Day weekend since 2004.
The film, which opened Thursday, beat expectations by grossing $27.8 million from Friday to Sunday, with expected earnings to reach $33 million through today, bringing the film's five-day total to over $40 million — about $10 million more than anticipated. Alita earned an estimated $56.1 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $94.3 million.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part fell to second place in its second weekend, bringing $21.2 million, and about $27 million for the whole weekend.
Third place went to Rebel Wilson's comedy Isn't It Romantic with $14.2 million from Friday to Sunday.
What Men Want took fourth place with an estimated $10.9 million from Friday to Sunday and about $12 million for the President's Day weekend.
Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to the 2017 horror comedy, landed fifth with $9.8 million from Friday to Sunday, and around $12 million for the whole President's Day weekend.
