A TV series adaptation of the popular Archie Comics storyline, Afterlife with Archie, is officially in the works on Disney+ with the Riverdale producers involved.

Following the end of the hit CW series, fans have been wondering whether there will be another Archie Comics TV series. After all, it still remains one of the most popular comic brands today, and we've seen different interpretations and genres explored throughout its history, whether it's horror, fantasy, or action.

According to Variety, Disney+ has given a script-to-series commitment to the TV series adaptation of Afterlife with Archie.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who penned the comic book series and served as showrunner for Riverdale, will also be involved as writer, executive producer, and potentially showrunner of the project if it officially moves forward to series.

The logline stated that the one-hour drama "re-imagines the beloved town of Riverdale as an apocalyptic, nightmare-fueled hellscape overrun with flesh-eating zombies." Unlike Riverdale, this will heavily lean towards the horror action genre.

The other plot details, including the casting and which Archie Comics characters will be heavily featured in the adaptation, are still under wraps. It is also unknown whether this will have some connection to Riverdale (which notably explored alternate universes in later seasons).

If this moves forward, it will be the fifth live-action TV series based on the Archie Comics library, following Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Katy Keene.

Is the Riverdale Cast Returning in the Afterlife with Archie TV Series?

So far, there is no official word yet on whether the Riverdale cast members will be brought back to reprise their roles (or an alternate version of their characters) in Afterlife with Archie.

Considering that the same team from Riverdale is involved, it won't be surprising if they decide to recruit some of the actors from the popular series and allow them to play a different version of their character.

It might take a while before fans hear some updates on the casting of the series since the script is still being written. Nevertheless, there is anticipation for the casting of who will play the beloved Archie Comics character in this new version.
