Seth Rogen Says Marvel Movies Are for Kids and Not Adults

There is no doubt that the MCU has dominated the movie space today with its multiple films each year that are box office successes and became part of the zeitgeist among the mass. Its popularity has also led to more superhero projects in both film and television that gear toward different styles and tones.

One of the popular non-MCU superhero projects right now is the hit Amazon series The Boys which is also based on the beloved comic books and has a more mature, grounded, and violent take on the superhero mythology that we don't usually see from the others.

Speaking recently with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Seth Rogen, who serves as one of the executive producers and occasional guest star on The Boys, opened up about his love for comic books and how it led him and his partner Evan Goldberg to do a TV series adaptation of the comics.

"One of the first things we ever bonded over was a love of comic books. I still have all the comic books I grew up with somewhere. I would go to the comic-book store every week," he said. "So as someone who just loves these stories, and always fantasized about seeing them brought to life, I think it's cool. I like a lot of the films."

However, Rogen also poked fun at the Marvel movies. While he has some appreciation for them, he also admitted that he felt that they are geared toward kids as an adult that has no children.

He added, "I think that Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy, and I think a lot of the filmmakers he's hired to make these movies are great filmmakers. But as someone who doesn't have children... It is [all] kind of geared towards kids, you know? There are times where I will forget. I'll watch one of these things, as an adult with no kids, and be like, 'Oh, this is just not for me.'"

It is understandable to hear that the Marvel movies might not be Rogen's taste and this is not the first time that we've heard a key creative in Hollywood express the same sentiment, especially in the past few years as there have been conversations about the value of comic book movies in cinema.

However, it might also rub the wrong way to some people who might disagree with his sentiment. While Marvel is under Disney, which is known for being a family-friendly entity, we have seen the MCU grapple with some serious themes in its projects that are appealing to adults.

At the end of the day, it's all Rogen's opinion and, as some people would say, "to each to their own" and this will be a continuing conversation for years to come as comic book movies continue to have a larger presence in theaters.
