Cillian Murphy is set to return as the fan-favorite gang leader Tommy Shelby in the upcoming feature-length Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man.
While fans are excited to see the historical crime drama return to both the big and small screens—especially with creator Steven Knight revealing it will also have a theatrical release—now may be the perfect time to revisit post-World War I Birmingham, England, and watch as Tommy and the Shelby clan take extreme measures to expand their criminal footprint once again.
In no particular order, urging both old and new viewers to immerse themselves in Tommy’s world for great drama and action, here are eight must-watch Peaky Blinders episodes worth revisiting before The Immortal Man drops.
1. Season 1 Episode 1
Of course, it’s better to start Peaky Blinders with its premiere episode to get a formal introduction of the former soldier and leader of the Peaky Blinders gang Tommy Shelby.
In the very first episode, he instantly finds himself at odds with his troubled brother, Arthur Jr. (Paul Anderson), and his trusted aunt, Polly (Helen McCrory).
However, the real problem comes when Chief Inspector Chester Campbell (Sam Neill) arrives in town to recover the guns stolen by the Shelbys under the orders of Winston Churchill (Andy Nyman).
This episode ends with the iconic blood covering Tommy—the first of many.
2. Season 1 Episode 5
This penultimate episode sets the stage for the explosive first-season finale, as Tommy is betrayed by Grace (Annabelle Wallis) after she makes a deal with Campbell to reveal the location of the stolen guns.
In other events, the Shelby patriarch, Arthur Sr. (Tommy Flanagan), returns—only to deceive his son, Arthur Jr., into giving him money before quickly disappearing.
Meanwhile, Grace realizes she’s in love with Tommy, but Campbell refuses to let it happen. As tensions rise, loyalties are tested, and secrets begin to unravel.
3. Season 2 Episode 6
Peaky Blinders Season 2 Episode 6 is considered the best episode of the series, thanks to Murphy’s masterful performance and Polly’s cathartic revenge against Campbell.
On Derby Day, Tommy plans to settle all his debts with his possible death looming. He also strikes an important deal with vicious gang leader Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) that lets Arthur be freed from prison.
However, things don’t fully go to plan. Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe) gets brutally attacked, while Polly takes her vengeance against Campbell by ending his life.
Just in time when Tommy learns that Grace is pregnant, his life is saved by receiving a new mission instead of execution.
4. Season 3 Episode 2
Tommy seems to have the perfect life with his marriage with Grace and their son, Charles, until the unexpected happens.
A new rivalry between the Shelbys and the Changrettas ignites after the Shelbys disapprove of Lizzie’s relationship with Angel Changretta (Pedro Caxade). They violently beat him and go even further by burning down his restaurant.
Of course, the Changrettas don’t let it slide. Angel’s father, Vicente (Kenneth Colley), orders a hit on Tommy at the Shelby Charity Foundation Dinner, but instead, the bullet strikes Grace, resulting in her death.
5. Season 3 Episode 6
Still reeling from Grace’s death, Tommy faces another devastating blow—the kidnapping of Charles.
Father Hughes (Paddy Considine) demands that Tommy blow up a Soviet train to disrupt relations between the United Kingdom and the USSR in exchange for Charles’ freedom.
However, they have a different plan. Michael is sent to save Charles and kill Hughes, despite going against Polly’s wishes.
Not knowing if Michael will succeed, Tommy follows Hughes’ demand and blows up the train while also stealing valuable jewels.
He then tells his family that he has made a deal whereby each of them will be arrested for the incident but assures them he has a plan.
As the police arrive and take them into custody, Tommy is the only Shelby remaining in the outside world.
6. Season 4 Episode 1
Arthur, Michael, Polly, and John (Joe Cole) are moments away from being hanged for their crimes, with nooses literally around their necks, when Tommy arrives just in time.
He proves that his family is merely a victim of a grand conspiracy, saving them from execution.
A year later, the Shelbys have gone their separate ways, but they reunite when the Sicilian Mafia emerges, led by Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), who vows to kill the family to avenge his brother and father.
As Michael is shot and John is murdered, a Shelby brother is taken off the board for the first time.
7. Season 5 Episode 6
The fifth season finale of Peaky Blinders features Tommy and Churchill’s (now played by Neil Maskell) meeting.
Churchill questions Tommy’s relationship with fascist leader Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) as Tommy infiltrates Mosley’s inner circle and plots his assassination.
Meanwhile, cracks begin to form within the Shelby family as Michael and his wife, Gina (Anya Taylor-Joy), scheme to take control of the Peaky Blinders.
To make matters worse, Tommy’s plans backfire, resulting in the deaths of his own men. As he spirals further, he appears to lose his grip on reality, ultimately putting a gun to his own head—just before the finale cuts to black.
This episode also serves as McCrory’s last after she died before the sixth and final season.
8. Season 6 Episode 6
Ending the list with the Peaky Blinders finale, Tommy believes he’s already dying after his doctors tell him he has contracted tuberculoma after his contact with his deceased daughter, Ruby (Heaven-Leigh Clee).
As he prepares to end things, Tommy makes arrangements for his family, destroys his own home, and outsmarts Michael by killing his cousin before Michael can get to him.
From there, Tommy embraces a life of acceptance and solitude—until he discovers that his doctor gave him a false diagnosis.
“I’m guessing that all you people decided that the only person who could ever kill Thomas Shelby is Thomas Shelby himself,” he says while confronting the doctor at gunpoint.
Though he spares the man's life, he makes a clear declaration: “I am back.”
True enough, Tommy Shelby is back and fans are about to see him in The Immortal Man again. Set in World War II, Tommy will face the Nazis and new enemies.
So far, Netflix has yet to announce when the Peaky Blinders movie will be released.
