Disney may be mining their “renaissance era” and older films for their live-action remakes, but with a new Moana adaptation in the works, it’s only a matter of time before they announce remakes for movies like Tangled and Frozen.
What’s interesting is, someone is already putting their name up as an option should Disney look for a live-action version of the Ice Queen, Elsa.
Anya Taylor-Joy Wants to Build a Snowman
Anya Taylor-Joy may be one of the last actresses fans would expect to star in a Disney movie, but when asked if she would have a role in mind, she already has a character she would want to play. Talking to Vogue HK, Taylor-Joy said, “It will be very interesting to shoot ice from your hand… All my siblings have children now, so I really want them to say, ‘My aunt is Elsa.’”
Admittedly, Taylor-Joy is more of ‘scream-queen-turned-auteur’ with projects like The VVitch, Last Night in Soho, Queen’s Gambit, The Northman, and Furiosa under her belt. Though some may think she can be too ‘mature’ for a property like Frozen, it’s possible she could portray a more villainous Elsa that was originally intended for the animation.
The question left is whether she can match Idina Menzel’s epic pipes:
More than 10 Years of Frozen
The first Frozen movie came out in 2013, and it’s nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon for Disney. While Tangled was marked as a ‘new renaissance’ for Disney movies, it was really Frozen that captured the hearts of an entire generation of kids and nobody on Earth was safe from its soundtrack which included hits like Let It Go and Do You Want to Build a Snowman.
It was 2019 when Frozen 2 hit theaters and Disney announced that a third film would be released in 2027. By the time that happens though, fans are already expecting Disney to have announced a live-action remake of the original film.
Incoming Live-Action Disney Remakes
So far, Disney is still looking to mine the original ‘renaissance era’ of the 90s, with upcoming remakes for films like Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The prequel Mufasa is also based on a remake of another 90s hit, The Lion King.
Interestingly enough, Moana, which came out three years after Frozen, is the one that’s been announced for a live-action remake set to come out in 2026; and it’s the only movie in its batch of ‘new renaissance’ Disney to get the remake treatment so far. It probably helps that A-lister Dwayne Johnson is also looking to push this movie forward—especially since his Black Adam dreams basically got crushed at the box office.
With the live-action remakes really banking on nostalgia to draw an audience in, it’s likely Disney could be waiting for the kids who grew up on Frozen to start joining the working class, so they would have money for tickets. Give it a good ten years and fans should be getting an announcement for a Frozen remake any day now.
A live-action Frozen remake hasn’t been announced.
