It’s been three years since Agatha Harkness terrorised Wanda Maximoff in WandaVision, and now she’s ready to have her own coven in the spinoff Agatha All Along.
Marvel Studios has just released a new teaser for the show, and fans online have already been poring over every frame, trying to find clues. So far, here are some of the hints that give clues on what to expect from the series, as well as easter eggs harkening back to the original WandaVision.
Hints at Agatha’s Role in WandaVision
Agatha is undoubtedly one of the more colourful characters in WandaVision, and the series will see the tables flipped on her as she is now the one trapped. Aubrey Plaza’s character Rio tries to ‘wake her up,’ she suddenly starts morphing into all the different costumes Agatha had in WandaVision, from her 80s workout get-up to the black-and-white 50s housewife she plays.
Homages to Other Horror Movies
With WandaVision being an homage to decades of sitcom television, it looks like Agatha All Along will also be doing the same thing, but rather than changing sitcom formats, it will change based on the evolution of the horror genre.
Fans have noticed that the teaser starts with a scene that looks like it’s ripped straight out of HBO’s Mare of Easttown—that being a murder/mystery—then the teaser has flashes of other scenes that some have said are inspired by horror classics like Suspiria. The final season with a possessed Agatha was also a clear homage to The Exorcist, but the look of the demon looks like it was something out of Sam Riami’s earlier Evil Dead movies.
Is Wanda Maximoff Alive?
The last time Agatha encountered Wanda Maximoff, Wanda put a spell on her so she would forget that she was in a hex. It looks like the series will flip the tables on Agatha, and now she has to be the one who tries to escape the hex.
By the looks of it, Wanda will make Agatha believe that she’s dead. At the beginning of the teaser, a dead body resembles Wanda—the dark fingers are reminiscent of those who use the Darkhold, and the hoodie is the same outfit that Wanda wears when she leaves Westview.
There is also this particular line from Avengers: Endgame where Doctor Strange tells Ebony Maw, “You’ll find removing a dead man’s spell troublesome,” which some fans think is a hint as to why Wanda would want Agatha to think that she was dead—resulting in her finding it more difficult to break out of the hex.
Though it did seem that Wanda did die by the end of Multiverse of Madness, a lot still believe that she survived; and that she’ll be a key player in the upcoming Secret Wars which will have the multiverse dimensions clash with one another.
Until Avengers: Secret Wars comes out though, all fans can really do is wait and see.
Is that Wanda’s Son Billy?
Wanda spends a good chunk of WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness pining for her children, Billy and Tommy, and it seems like Agatha All Along will feature one of the kids as Agatha’s familiar. The synopsis for the series reads:
“The infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road.”
Some suspect that the “goth teen” is played by Joe Locke and he’s actually Billy Maximoff who is also trapped in the same mind plane that Agatha is in. In the comics, Billy is the young Avenger Wiccan, and he’s proven himself to be very adept with magic.
It’s also worth noting that Wiccan in the comics is gay, and some fans have been noticing how Joe Locke in the teaser is pretty much a budding theater kid:
This is all speculation for now, but Locke is seen wearing clothes in the teaser that match that of Wiccan’s blue and red costume. The inclusion of Wiccan in the story could also be the connection the series is looking for when it comes to including Wanda in the narrative. Maybe this series could be the official confirmation that a version of her lives after the events of the Doctor Strange sequel.
Is Aubrey Plaza’s Rio the Big Bad of the Series?
Aubrey Plaza had already played a villain in the non-canon Legion miniseries, and now the self-titled ‘Evil Hag’ is going to be playing a witch in Agatha All Along.
It’s said that Plaza’s role in the series is an original character by the name of Rio Vidal and just like how Wanda’s powers are represented with red and Agatha’s with purple, it does seem like Rio’s powers have a green hue to them.
With the MCU establishing different sources of magic like Wanda’s Chaos Magic, it’s said that Rio makes use of Earth Magic and it would have some vital role with what the teaser called the ‘Witches Road’. With Agatha being the ‘guide’ for Wanda in WandaVision, it does look like Rio will be playing Agatha’s role in that she’s the one who’s going to be guiding Agatha out of the hex this time.
Since it was Wanda that trapped Agatha in the first place, some would consider that Wanda is the main villain of the series and Rio will be playing the mentor type. With Agatha seemingly building up her own Coven of odd witches (including Patti LuPone and Sasheer Zamata) to help her escape, it’s possible that the real villain in this series could be harder to pinpoint from just one teaser.
