Sydney Sweeney takes on the leading star as Sister Cecilia, a meek nun who joins the convent as a part of her awakening journey.

Prior to becoming a full-fledged nun, Mother Superior, and her fellow nuns start orienting Sister Cecilia on the dos and don'ts in their secluded space once she officially becomes one of them.

However, trouble weighs heavy on her footsteps when the church's local doctor decides to examine whether or not her body has kept its purity.

Despite repeatedly assuring the church that Sister Cecilia has never committed sexual contact, she surprisingly comes with a child, according to the ultrasound.

This leads the elders at the convent to believe that Sister Cecilia is essentially the second coming of the Virgin Mary herself.

She gets exempted from her daily chores and is tasked to focus on raising the baby growing inside her. This sparks jealousy from one of the younger nuns, Sister Isabelle.

In an attempt to drown Cecilia in the bath, screaming "It should've been me!" she falls off to her death from the third story of the church.

Stranger things start happening since then, forcing the nuns to keep Cecilia from ever leaving this place. This is where the Bible passage comes in: it was scribbled behind the Virgin Mary's portrait. Here's what it means.

The 'Second Coming of Virgin Mary' Brings More Chaos Than Good

Behind the portrait of the original Virgin Mary comes a grim warning for Sister Cecilia and perhaps the entirety of the convent: 2 Corinthians 11:14 was scribbled against it.

The passage of 2 Corinthians 11:14 reads: "Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." This implies that perhaps the second coming of the Virgin Mary may not be bringing all the better for the church.

As much as Mother Superior and the elders had hoped for the next Mother Mary to be living among them, it would seem that the creature growing inside of Sister Cecilia's womb was not the "angel" and "savior" they were waiting for.
