- Quick Answer: Zack Snyder clarified that he hasn't gotten around to watching James Gunn's Superman yet, though he still supports Gunn and DC Studios.
Zack Snyder seems to be walking back his praise for James Gunn’s 2025 film Superman after revealing in a new interview that he still hasn’t seen it.
Before James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, Zack Snyder was the creative force behind Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League – an era commonly known as the Snyderverse.
But while Snyder previously praised Gunn’s take on the DC films, it turns out he hasn’t watched Superman at all.
What Did Zack Snyder Say About James Gunn’s Superman?

Back in February, Zack Snyder gave a positive comment about James Gunn’s Superman film on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast and even expressed his excitement to see the next installment, Man of Tomorrow.
“James’ Superman, which is amazing and all the best to them, and I can’t wait to see the next movie, and it's just awesome,” he said.
He also praised the now-DC Studios co-CEO, calling his style “singular in his storytelling.”
“His ability to channel mythological and pop culture into what I would consider just iconic and a very particular point of view that’s both poignant and funny,” he continued. “He's the best at it that I can think of, and I think that he's a great steward of that world. So, you know, that's good. That's great for fans.”
However, a few months later, Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter that he hadn’t “gotten around to” seeing Superman yet.
But don’t get the 60-year-old filmmaker wrong. He quickly added that he is a big supporter of Gunn and wants the DC division to do well.
Will Zack Snyder Return to the DC Universe?

Zack Snyder officially stepped away from directing Justice League in 2017 following the death of his daughter, Autumn.
However, even before his departure, there had been tensions between him and Warner Bros. Pictures executives due to the darker, divisive tone of films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with the studio wanting it to have a lighter tone similar to Marvel Studios’ superhero movies.
But as the studio brought in Joss Whedon for extensive reshoots, the public demanded the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on streaming, and the broader universe eventually went into a reboot.
Now, while it looks like Snyder is already over directing DC films, his recent return to Warner Bros. Studios has ignited fans’ hopes of his return to the DC Universe.
“Hanging out with a bunch of amazing people today down at the WB,” he captioned his photo showing him in front of the iconic historic Warner Bros. Water Tower located at the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank, California.
While there may be other movies that he may be discussing with the studio, the fact that he may have mended fences with it makes his return to directing DC films again more possible.
