In the book, Mickey continues his work defending people failed by the justice system. However, after winning a complicated trial that frees a wrongfully convicted man, he finds himself flooded with letters from prisoners claiming their innocence.
Mickey then enlists the help of his half-brother, Harry Bosch, to look into these cases. The main focus soon centers on a woman imprisoned for killing her former husband, who was also a sheriff’s deputy, while insisting she is innocent.
