Kristen Stewart is open to returning to the Twilight universe but not as its main star, Bella Swan. Instead, she’s interested in stepping behind the camera as a director.

The Love Lies Bleeding star has expressed interest in joining the lineage of Twilight filmmakers, from Catherine Hardwicke to Chris Weitz, and potentially taking the helm of the franchise that launched her career.

So, will there be a Twilight reboot and could Stewart direct it?

The Twilight film series catapulted Kristen Stewart’s career, beginning with the first movie in 2008.

For four years, she portrayed Bella Swan, a 17-year-old girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

The original film spawned four sequels: New Moon (2009), Eclipse (2010), Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011), and Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012). Altogether, the franchise grossed over $3 billion at the worldwide box office.

Now, more than a decade later, Stewart has expressed interest in returning to the series – not as its star, but as a director.

“I would love—look, I love what Catherine [Hardwicke] did, I love what Chris [Weitz] did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies,” Stewart told Entertainment Tonight at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Creative Impact Awards, where she was named one of the 10 Directors to Watch for her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.

“They were so themselves and weird and kind of squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn’t really know what they were yet like before they blew up,” she continued.

Stewart went on to imagine having a “huge budget” for a potential remake, along with “a bunch of love and support.”

“Yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake,” she added. “I’m doing it! I’m committed!”

Twilight

Yes, Twilight will be back but not as a live-action reboot. Instead, the franchise is returning as an animated series based on Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 companion novel to her best-selling book series.

A retelling of the first entry in the Twilight saga, Midnight Sun unfolds entirely from the perspective of Edward Cullen.

Meyer serves as an executive producer alongside her Fickle Fish Films partner, Meghan Hibbett, with Lionsgate Television behind the adaptation.

“We’re going to go out with the Twilight series – an animated series,” Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said during a media conference in March 2023. “I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

So far, there’s no word on when the new Twilight series will be released or which actors will be cast.

However, original director Catherine Hardwicke previously suggested Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega as potential choices for Edward and Bella during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Considering that both are Netflix favorites through their respective projects, Frankenstein and Wednesday, it may not be far from happening.
