Speaking candidly about his experience spearheading the epic with Omelete, the I, Tonya, and Cruella filmmaker admitted that while he initially didn't seek out a superhero tentpole on his resume, the creative freedom offered by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn changed his point of view.

When asked what it would take to bring him back for a follow-up and whether Supergirl 2 is in the plans, Gillespie said, "I have to read the script." Recalling his experience on the first film, he added, "[On the first film] I read it, got to the second scene, and was like, 'Oh, I'm in, I'm totally in.'"

"Obviously, I'd love to work with Milly again," Gillespie added, sharing his praises for her raw, emotionally complex portrayal of Kara, "I loved creating this character with her. We'll see what happens."

Gillespie also revealed that Gunn explicitly encouraged him to treat the cosmic blockbuster like its own graphic novel to avoid the rigid "house style" that often plagues modern cinematic universes, which likely made the job of helming Kara Zor-El's journey all the more interesting.

Where Will Fans See Supergirl Next in the DC Universe?

As thrilling as it would be to see Supergirl in a direct sequel of her own, her next project isn't quite conventional. As Milly Alcock told the same site, she confirmed she'll be heading to the Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow set to reprise the Girl of Steel, teasing, "Maybe soon, maybe in a few weeks."

Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira, who started writing a Teen Titans movie for DC Studios before the Wonder Woman reboot, also shared her hopes to see another female DC character front and center in their own project: "I'm not going to say what I would love to adapt," she teased, "I'm going to say what I would love to see someone else do, and I would love to see someone else do Catwoman."

In the meantime, fans will have to wait for Supergirl to zoom onto the big screens on June 26, 2026.
