Why Did the New Lord of the Rings Movie Recast Viggo Mortensen?

Andy Serkis has recently confirmed that Viggo Mortensen will not be reprising his role as Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum.
While the original trilogy brought J.R.R. Tolkien's world to life on the big screen, The Hunt for Gollum focuses on the untold story between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The upcoming film promises to explore a smaller part of the universe, particularly following Gollum, aka Sméagol, the creepy, corrupted creature that became obsessed with the Ring (always calling it "my precious") after murdering his cousin for it.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Serkis addressed the recast and confirmed, amid wild speculations, that the Aragorn star will be replaced: "I don't know what's out there at the moment, but I know there's a lot of speculation, but let's just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone."
Despite missing an original cast member, The Hunt for Gollum will be held by the same creative team that handled the original franchise. This is to ensure the movie stays true to the established lore and Peter Jackson's vision of Middle-Earth.
Everything We Know So Far About The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Andy Serkis, who previously played the live-action role of Gollum in the original trilogy, will star and direct in The Hunt for Gollum. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who wrote Jackson's trilogy, are working on the script along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Meanwhile, Peter Jackson will be producing alongside Walsh and Boyens.
While Sir Ian McKellen previously said he is open to returning and reprising the role of Gandalf, his involvement has yet to be confirmed, as of writing.
As for what we know so far about the plot for The Hunt for Gollum, the new Lord of the Rings movie will shed light on how they captured Gollum and what happens after Gandalf, Aragorn, and the Wood Elves catch up to him. The Hunt for Gollum is reportedly between Bilbo Baggins' (Ian Holm) birthday party and Gandalf's return to the Shire after discovering Bilbo's magical ring.
For now, fans can expect The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum on the big screens on December 17, 2027.
