  • Quick Answer: Christopher Nolan used modern English in The Odyssey to ensure the characters' dialogue carries emotional, rather than intellectual, meaning for contemporary audiences.

Christopher Nolan recently explained why the characters in The Odyssey are speaking in modern English dialogue despite its Ancient Greek setting.

A lot of fans have been looking forward to the Oscar-winning filmmaker's upcoming epic, which is an adaptation of the classic Homer story. However, some of the creative choices have already been criticized, especially the decision to have the characters speak in an American accent and modern language instead of an old English-type of dialogue.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Christopher Nolan addressed his decision to have the characters in The Odyssey speak in modern English.

For the Oscar winner, it was not a difficult choice to use contemporary language for his adaptation of the ancient Greek story, as he prioritizes the "language that has emotional, not intellectual meaning to people."

"I was maybe being naïve, it might bite me on the ass, but I wanted an earthy narrative. To me, it was a no-brainer," the director said.

Aside from the contemporary dialogue, Nolan also explained why he cast several A-list stars for the movie, despite some of them playing characters that have less screen time.

He noted that the characters "are mythological figures, iconic in some ways," which is why he "wanted to cast it big, get the finest bunch of actors." In this way, the presentation of the story will be more accessible to a modern audience.

It would be interesting to see how the general audience is going to respond to the film's creative choice, and whether the modern English language will indeed work for them. After all, we have become accustomed to swords-and-sandals epics in old traditional English, and, by using contemporary dialogue, perhaps the modern audience will appreciate the thousands-of-years-old story better.
