  • Quick Answer: The series changed Kay’s father’s death from a long illness to a traumatic shooting to provide a more visually powerful, defining origin for her career.

The second episode of the new Prime Video series Scarpetta revealed a surprising change to the backstory of Dr. Kay Scarpetta that caught fans off guard.

As book readers now, the Patricia Cornwell novels explain that Kay's choice to become a forensic pathologist was caused by seeing her father suffer a lingering death from leukemia. However, that was not exactly the case with the TV series adaptation, as it revealed that Kay saw her father being shot and killed by a pair of robbers right in front of her eyes.

Fans have been wondering why the series made a drastic change to the character's backstory, and whether Cornwell approved the idea.

In an interview with Gold Derby, showrunner Liz Sarnoff explained why she decided to change Dr. Kay Scarpetta's backstory in the TV series adaptation of Scarpetta.

"I liked the idea of showing her as a child over this one body and then cutting [to her as an adult] where she's just surrounded by bodies. To me, that visual spoke to how that one moment of trauma is the thing that you live out over and over again," she said.

Not only that, the choice to open each episode with a flashback was rooted in a desire to reveal "the moment where each of the characters traumatically broke."

Fortunately, Cornwell approved the idea when she was told that the series would change the character's backstory.

"Patricia had suggested that we do something more dramatic with [Kay's origin story], and even said: 'Maybe her father was shot in a robbery.' We really embraced that," Sarnoff said.

Cornwell even told the showrunner that she wished that she had done the same creative direction when she wrote the novels.

"I said to her, 'I wish I thought of that!' I should have done that originally. It's such a defining moment. In the books, Scarpetta's father has a long, drawn-out disease. That works fine for my story, because Kay has lived with death for a long time," the author shared.

"But for television, when you see that horrible scene of her father dying right in front of her like that, it's far more convincing as the moment that transformed her forever."
