As a reality TV viewer, you know that there is always a villain or an antagonistic figure that always stirs the drama and has become an important part of the show.
After all, reality shows always live or die in drama and we have seen that several audiences have embraced the villain characters or even more invested in their journey just as much as the heroes.
The Importance of Reality TV Villains
Most would argue that a reality TV show will not be entertaining without a villain figure who stirs the pot and makes the drama more exciting.
As CrimeReads explained, a reality TV villain is "uninterested in peaceful coexistence with the other contestants: rather, their sole focus is on their relationship with the lead."
After all, it's been proven time and time again that a villain figure can add more entertainment value to watching a reality TV show and a narrative arc is also being built around them to either redeem them or sustain their antagonistic presence.
Reality TV villains are also always interesting to follow because of the clever one-liners and journeys that make them worth investing just like how we follow the "heroes" that we root for.
They also have fatal flaws that "really make them fascinating" where they have "moments when the façade cracks, and you can see the human beneath the performance."
The Rise of House of Villains
The popularity of reality TV villains has led to the creation of the E! reality competition series House of Villains.
In case you're not familiar, House of Villains is a Big Brother-type series where a cast of reality TV villains are housed under one roof and compete in challenges for power. They vote to vanish each other until the last man standing wins.
Joel McHale serves as the host of the series. So far, two seasons have aired and there is no news yet as of the writing of this article whether E! is renewing it for a third season.
It has become a popular show in E! due to the appeal of seeing our favorite reality TV villains come together in one show and compete together. That alone makes the entire experience more dramatic and intense for the cast.
The series gave us countless examples of why reality TV villains are important and how it can be wildly entertaining for a viewer to see them all together under the same umbrella since all of them have distinct and strong personalities that clash.
