San Diego Comic-Con 2024 had some huge reveals, specifically Hall H specials like Deadpool and Wolverine and The Fantastic Four; there were also panels for shows like The Boys and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

One absent project that many people were expecting an update on was James Gunn’s Superman, which will be released in theatres in 2025. DC Studios co-head Peter Safran offers an update with the next Man of Steel skipping out on this year’s SDCC.

Why No Superman This Year at SDCC 2024?

The simple answer is: There simply isn’t anything to show. Talking to The Wrap (via BleedingCool), Safran explained, "From my perspective, it's just too soon… A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign, and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period rather than stretching it out. That's our instinct on that."

It is worth noting that the Superman production is still ongoing and has yet to be wrapped up. Safran continues, "James hasn't wrapped yet. I think when you put your first foot forward, for us, for our first theatrical live-action experience, there's a lot of expectation on that. And we really have to make sure we deliver every step of the way, but certainly with the first time out. So that's why we opted not to be there.”

Despite the lack of James Gunn’s Superman, DC is still expected to promote other takes on the character, like The CW’s Superman & Lois series. There’s also been a lot of positive buzz surrounding the animated My Adventures with Superman.

It’s also worth noting that the spread of Superman set photos online kind of just means that the promotion for the movie just runs by itself. Sure fans would want an official look, but like Deadpool & Wolverine, it does seem that the hype for a character like Superman doesn’t need any extra work to get people online interested.

When Could First Official Look at Superman Come Out?

With the movie set to come out in June of next year, it’s possible that DC Studios may want to wait until the start of 2025 to release the first official look for Superman. Then again, with the property being as huge as it is, they could be planning some kind of reveal sometime later in the year.

The Joker sequel is set to come out this October, so it would make sense that WB would want to promote another DC property around that time. Though they have cancelled DC FanDome, there’s no reason why they can’t bring it back this year—and it usually takes place around October as well.

In the meantime, fans will just have to wait. Gunn himself has been posting all kinds of updates on the production, and it’s only a matter of time before it wraps and DC will be ready to give fans their first look at this new Man of Steel. David Corenswet already looks the part, but how are audiences going to feel when they see the completed visual effects with some music in the background?

Superman is set to soar into theatres on July 11, 2025.
