One of the first things we hear about Mabel's living situation is the fact that she describes herself as "homeless", which leads fans to ask: why is Mabel homeless in Only Murders in the Building season 4?
What exactly happened to the Arconia apartment she had been staying at since the show's debut? How does she even pay rent? Well, here's what we know.
SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building, so proceed with caution.
Mabel is the "Homeless, Jobless, Mumbling, Millennial Charm" in Season 4
In the premiere of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Oliver (played by Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) come over to Charles' (Steve Martin) apartment to break some news.
Right after Oliver enters Charles' home, Mabel gives a little update about her current life: she crashed over at Oliver's. She is still homeless. And the robe she wore was the "least offensive" thing she could borrow from him.
It doesn't help that the production of their Only Murders podcast had the original trio replaced by stunt doubles and Mabel was stereotyped as a "homeless, jobless, mumbling, millennial charm" in the midst of it.
But fans found themselves scratching their heads at trying to think how come she had only found herself homeless now. Staying at the Arconia required a huge sum of money, so how could she have afforded that?
How Mabel Has Lived Long in the Arconia in the Previous Seasons
Here's a little rundown: Mabel was initially introduced as an "aspiring artist" who stayed at her aunt's apartment in New York, Apartment 12E on the 12th floor of the Arconia building.
However, instead of paying rent as any tenant usually does, Mabel stays in her aunt's home as a favor, simply until she renovates the room.
The renovation went through seasons 1 to 3, and just when she thought she had accomplished her art, her aunt practically kicked her out by telling the news: her aunt had sold the apartment.
This left Mabel four weeks to find a new place, which was not going well, as seen in the premiere.
Even though the trio got a Hollywood deal, the story pitch for their project requires signing away their life rights, which Mabel had been quite hesitant to do, given the description of her "character" at play.
