Sir Daniel Day-Lewis recently opened up about his decision to return to acting after an eight-year retirement.
Back in 2017, the acting legend announced that he was formally retiring from acting after starring in the acclaimed film Phantom Thread, where he received an Oscar nomination. However, his retirement did not end up being permanent.
Why Daniel Day-Lewis Decided to Return to Acting
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Day-Lewis explained why he decided to return to acting after retiring from the field for eight years.
He cited his son Ronan, the director of his upcoming film Anemone, as the main reason why he's making his comeback.
"I had some residual sadness because I knew Ronan was going to go on to make films, and I was walking away from that," the Oscar winner said.
"I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn’t necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production?'"
Day-Lewis also admitted that he had some reservations and anxieties when considering whether he would return to acting and star in his son's film.
"It was just kind of a low-level fear, [an] anxiety about re-engaging with the business of filmmaking. The work was always something I loved. I never, ever stopped loving the work," he said.
"But there were aspects of the way of life that went with it that I’d never come to terms with — from the day I started out to today. There’s something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the end of it."
What to Expect in Anemone
According to the logline, Anemone "explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons." Day-Lewis' character is "a recluse living in the woods of Northern England."
Aside from Day-Lewis, the cast also includes Sean Bean, Samuel Bottomley, Safia Oakley-Green, and Samantha Morton.
Day-Lewis also co-wrote the film with his son and the director, Ronan Day-Lewis. The film is currently scheduled for release in theaters on October 3.
