Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has shot down the possibility of doing a reunion movie with the original cast.

For years, fans have been clamoring for a movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which would reunite the original cast. However, to this day, Warner Bros. has no plans to do a legacy sequel to the original movies, and they opted to reboot the franchise instead with an HBO series that will retell the entire book series.

Is the Harry Potter Reunion Movie Still Happening?

In an interview with The Times U.K., Columbus addressed the possibility of doing a Harry Potter reunion movie with the original cast.

However, he shared that he doesn't see the project happening due to J.K. Rowling's controversial political stance, particularly on the transgender community, and the cast's disagreement with her.

"It’s never going to happen. It’s gotten so complicated with all the political stuff. Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible," the director said.

While the reunion movie won't likely happen, Columbus shared that he is still in touch with the original stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

"I keep very close contact with Daniel Radcliffe and I just spoke to him a few days ago. I still have a great relationship with all the kids in the cast," he said.

What to Expect in HBO's Harry Potter Series

The HBO series reboot of Harry Potter is currently in production in the UK, with plans to premiere the first season in 2027. Each season will cover one book in the Rowling-penned series.

The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Strout, Arabella Stanton, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Bertie Carvel, Johnny Flynn, Bel Powley, and many more. Francesca Gardiner serves as the showrunner while Rowling is involved as one of the executive producers.

Recently, it was announced that Warwick Davis will be returning as Professor Filius Flitwick, marking his homecoming to the wizarding world in a role he originated for the film series.
