Cate Blanchett's Catherine Ravenscroft may have been living the perfect life with her seemingly normal life for years until the past comes to stab her in the back. A mysterious novel lands in her hands, dictating how her vacation in Italy happened.

Penned by a man named E.J. Preston, Catherine is left horrified as a version of her traumatic backstory unfolds in the pages under someone else's name. It wasn't the type to earn her accolades, no.

If anything, it was a memory she wanted to escape from. And it haunted her right back anyway.

The story of Disclaimer revolves around the vengeful writer Preston, who seeks the truth straight from the woman he found in the pictures of his deceased son, Jonathan.

As the book dedication states, The Perfect Strangers is for his son to find out the truth behind his death.

Preston presses in the novel about how Catherine had a vacation fling with his son, threatening to release the scandalous photos she had allegedly sent him when they were still in Spain. The true story, however, comes from Catherine.

Their story is no love story or summer romance of any sort. And there was no such thing as a whirlwind romance between Catherine and his son Jonathan, either.

As it turns out, Jonathan stalked and raped Catherine, a stranger, during her trip to Spain. It happened two decades ago. After the sexual assault, Catherine's son, Nicholas, nearly drowned to death and Jonathan died saving her son's life.
