Kevin Smith reveals the actor he wants to take over Alan Rickman’s role as Metatron in the upcoming Dogma 2, following Rickman’s passing in 2016.
More than 25 years after the 1999 cult classic Dogma, its sequel is finally in the works with the original director returning to helm the film. But with the original Voice of God no longer with us, who will become the next Metatron?
Who Will Play Metatron in Dogma 2?

Sure, nobody can replace Rickman, especially his distinctive, deep, languid voice, but Smith has the perfect actor in mind to play as Metatron in Dogma 2.
During his appearance on the /Film Weekly podcast, the filmmaker revealed he wanted Helen Mirren to be the next Voice of God.
“I want to write it for Helen Mirren. She is incredibly Alan-adjacent,” he said.
However, he clarified that Mirren’s version of Metatron would be different from Rickman’s.
“She's not playing Metatron, but she plays this movie's version of Metatron. For me, I met her years ago with Alan, at this Empire movie awards ceremony,” he continued.
So while he believed Adam Driver would be a perfect fit, looking like a young Rickman (only taller), he still wanted Mirren.
“When I was thinking, 'Well, I don't have Alan,' at one point I was like, 'Well, Adam Driver looks like a young Alan Rickman, just taller.' But then I was like, no,” he added. “Then I thought, 'You know what? Helen Mirren, aside from being one of my favorite actors on the planet, I had that crossover moment with her and Alan at one point.' As a writer and a romantic, you'll make any connection or any justification you can. But it started me thinking, maybe it would be Helen Mirren. So I'm writing it for Helen Mirren.”
Will Ben Affleck Return in Dogma 2?

Smith also teased Ben Affleck’s possible return in Dogma 2. While his character, Bartleby, died in the original movie after becoming mortal, the director still has plans to include the Batman actor in the sequel, alongside Matt Damon, who played Loki.
So, while their return isn’t confirmed yet, Smith revealed his plans to explore their fate – whether they were forgiven in the end after being cast out of Heaven or became fallen angels in Hell.
“After Dogma came out, people would be like, ‘What happens to Bartleby and Loki at the end?' And I was like, well, if you’re a touchy-feely Christian, you believe in forgiveness,” he told ComicBook. “But if you’re an old school Catholic like myself, they’re burning in hell. They broke the laws, and that’s what happens. There’s punishment there. So that plays into our follow-up. Good eye, good eye.”
While it remains to be seen if Dogma 2 will come to fruition, it’s highly likely that Smith’s plans will ultimately materialize.
