As Crispin Freeman is a popular voice actor, it makes sense that there’s a lot of interest in his role in the new Pokémon anime.
On top of that, the latest anime’s new direction for the series makes it a must-watch. After all, aside from featuring a brand-new protagonist, it also features lots of intriguing new characters like Friede.
Meet Friede, the Pokémon Professor and the Rising Volt Tacklers’ Commander
Pokémon Professors are a fixture in the series, with the likes of Professor Oak being well-known among casual and long-time fans.
For Pokémon Horizons, there’s also a Pokémon Professor and his name is Friede. He’s not your typical lab coat-wearing professor though. That’s because he’s the leader of the Rising Volt Tacklers.
In this new series, the protagonist Liko is being targeted by the organization called “The Explorers” as they are after her pendant. She was then rescued by the Rising Volt Tacklers, a group she soon joined.
As the group’s leader, Friede is a capable trainer and a caring leader. He also has a more forgetful side though, as he sometimes forgets to mention things to his friends.
He's also usually accompanied by Captain Pikachu, his partner whom he often butts heads with. Still, even though they clash, these two share a tight bond.
Friede also doesn’t like being acknowledged as a professor. Plus, he doesn’t like talking about his past, though he soon does so to his teammates.

Who Is Crispin Freeman in Pokémon Horizons?
Because Friede is a key character in the series, it should come as no surprise that he is voiced by Crispin Freeman in the Pokémon Horizons anime.
Freeman is a veteran English dub voice actor as he has played numerous popular roles over the years.
For instance, he’s the voice of Itachi Uchiha in Naruto, Gyomei Himejima in Demon Slayer, Shizuo Heiwajima in Durarara!!, and Togusa in Ghost in the Shell.
For comparison, Friede’s Japanese VA is Taku Yashiro, another notable voice actor. Yashiro is best known for being the voice of Sagara Sanosuke in the Rurouni Kenshin remake and Iskahn in Sword Art Online.
Fans will see more of Friede and the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers in Pokémon Horizons, which is finally streaming on Netflix.
