The hit battle-action manga, Kagurabachi, which has captured the attention of fans worldwide, is officially set to become an anime.
Hailed as a next-generation Shonen Jump masterpiece and following in the footsteps of popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and SPY×FAMILY, it’s no surprise that Takeru Hokazono’s work is being adapted for the screen.
But one burning question remains, which studio will take on the task of bringing this manga to life? Let us explore the story's premise and everything we know about the upcoming anime.
What Is Kagurabachi About?
The Kagurabachi manga series debuted in September 2023 and quickly rose to fame. Despite having only four volumes released, it has sold millions of copies worldwide and gained popularity in both Japan and the West.
The series has received high praise for its gripping story and stunning artwork, winning the NEXT MANGA AWARD 2024 and securing seventh place in AnimeJapan’s “Most Wanted Anime Adaptation” poll.
Kagurabachi follows Chihiro Rokuhira, an 18-year-old swordsman and the son of Kunishige Rokuhira, a swordsmith renowned for crafting the coveted Enchanted Blades.
Kunishige’s exceptional creations catch the attention of a dangerous group called the Hishaku, who steal the Enchanted Blades and murder him in the process. Devastated by his father’s death, Chihiro vows to exact revenge on those responsible.
While its premise may seem straightforward, Kagurabachi has captured fans’ hearts, due to its meticulous storytelling, immersive world-building, and dynamic characters. The male protagonist, Chihiro, stands out for his cold, calculating demeanor, a stark contrast to the upbeat, optimistic heroes typical of Shonen series.
Interestingly, Kagurabachi also owes part of its popularity to its viral status as a meme, which drew even more readers to the manga and boosted its widespread acclaim.
Which Studio Will Handle the Kagurabachi Anime?
With the buzz surrounding it, it’s easy to imagine Kagurabachi being entrusted to top-tier animation studios like MAPPA or CloverWorks.
After all, MAPPA is known for hits like Jujutsu Kaisen, while CloverWorks produced The Elusive Samurai. Both studios have experience handling dark shonen themes, making them natural contenders for adapting Kagurabachi.
However, according to a report by Toyo Keizai, Kagurabachi will be adapted by Cygames Pictures, with CyberAgent and Shochiku overseeing production.
Cygames Pictures is no stranger to success, having produced the mecha anime Brave Bang Bavern, a major hit in Japan, and Uma Musume, a gacha-game-inspired series praised for its exceptional animation. The studio is also working on highly anticipated 2025 releases, including Apocalypse Hotel and The Summer Hikaru Died, the latter being an adaptation of another critically acclaimed manga.
While an official announcement has yet to be made, there’s currently no information on where the anime will stream or when it will be released.
The decision to choose Cygames Pictures reportedly stems from a desire to avoid overburdening studios already juggling multiple projects. According to the report, they aimed to minimize the risk of production delays or compromised quality, which are issues that are increasingly common in the anime industry. Many would likely agree this was a smart move.
