War has generally received positive reviews from critics. As of this writing, it has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 88% based on the 41 reviews gathered.
Lucy Mangan of The Guardian called the new series a "massive, massive fun, with a ripped-from-the-headlines feel to it that only adds to the entertainment."
Randy Myers of San Jose Mercury News wrote that War "doesn’t shed new light on high-profile divorce cases or legal dramas per se, but it succeeds in offering a cynical view into the cutthroat strategizing that goes on in bedrooms, courtrooms and boardrooms."
Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter praised the show's writing as it "understands better than anyone that sometimes what matters in a tale is not how factually true or morally righteous it is, but how compellingly it sweeps you along for the ride."
