What Is the Real-Life Program Behind Lioness?

Lioness may be fictional, but it’s actually loosely based on Team Lioness, the female United States Marines attached to combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In fact, Jill Wagner, who plays QRF team leader Bobby and serves as the show’s executive producer, pitched the Lioness idea to series creator Taylor Sheridan after learning about the program from her husband, David Lemanowicz, who joined the military after his hockey career ended in 2008.

Thankfully, the showrunner was her old acting coach, so she had access to him.

She told Parade in 2024:

  • “From that moment on, I knew there was a story to tell. It took about five years, but I never gave up.”

This made her interested in portraying military women in lead roles like this.

  • “It is important to give these women the moment they deserve on screen while not taking any away from the men who also serve. They both deserve our respect for the sacrifices they make.”

However, she didn’t want the show to just feature female characters like Barbies with guns. Instead, she wanted it to represent women in the military, and she commended Sheridan for doing it “brilliantly.”
