Why Did Back to the Future 4 Never Happen?

The Back to the Future franchise may have been a smash hit, but the movies didn't go past Back to the Future Part III.
While many fans would have been thrilled to see an extension of the series with a Part IV, the creators had a valid reason for discontinuing it altogether.
First of all, the initial movie was supposed to be a standalone one, which only happened to have the perfect cliffhanger ending to set up a sequel. So, technically, the continued story, whose movies weren't as successful at the box office, wasn't planned either.
Creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale previously revealed (via Variety) that Universal did want more of Back to the Future. But these creators were reluctant and ultimately said they weren't interested, nor were they eager to make another after Part III officially wrapped things up for them.
The creators also made it clear that they weren't going to let anyone make remakes without their consent, either. Zemeckis even declared that the project would only happen "over his dead body."
So, only the three Back to the Future movies exist for now. But that's okay, because that's still a lot of Sci-Fi fun to start streaming today!
