In a recent interview with Collider, Peter Safran revealed that they will decide on Lanterns' renewal for a second season before the end of this year.
He also explained that the series will only move forward if the writers manage to come up with a story worthy of being a successor to the first season.
"If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season," Safran said.
However, the DC Studios co-chairman highlighted how the first season had a successful reception and how it made people interested again in the Green Lantern property years after the maligned 2011 film.
"This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right? The thing that's most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it's brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion," he said.
For now, it looks like fans should wait for two more months before they'll find out whether Lanterns will have a second season, but based on the reception, it would be more surprising if the series is not renewed.
Damon Lindelof Comments on Lanterns Season 2
In an interview a few weeks ago, co-creator Damon Lindelof opened up about the development of the second season of Lanterns and shared tidbits on how the writers are figuring out the story.
"I can only tell you that everybody in the Season 1 room, inclusive of the writers who are working on ideating on Season 2, felt like even though we knew that it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, that the worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, 'Oh, he was a clone' or 'He's only mostly dead' in the Princess Bride vernacular," he teased.
"In terms of like moving forward into subsequent seasons of the show, I swear to you, as I look at you in the eye on Wednesday this 30th of September, I do not know anything about the creative, and I wouldn't want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in."
