Some of the celebrities that we know and love from the past have taken a break from the spotlight and stepped back despite their fame.
There are various reasons why such stars would do that kind of career move whether it's personal life and struggles or simply not wanting to pursue stardom anymore. Let's explore it all below.
Celebrities Who Took Acting Hiatus for Personal Reasons
Some celebrities decided to step back from fame due to personal reasons whether it's to focus on motherhood or having a simple family life without the distraction of stardom.
The most recent example is Cameron Diaz, who decided to take a hiatus from acting after starring in the 2014 remake of Annie to focus on having her own family. She still occasionally made public appearances at events and talk shows from time to time.
However, she is now back in front of cameras as she is starring in the upcoming Netflix film Back in Action and will reprise the voice role of Princess Fiona in Shrek 5.
Another example is legendary actress Jane Fonda. She notably retired from acting in the early '90s after marrying Ted Turner. She eventually returned to the screen in 2005 and had a consistent acting career again since then.
Stepping Back from Acting for Another Career
Some celebrities also took a break to shift to a different career instead where they won't be the center of the spotlight.
The most famous example is the twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. They were popular child stars from their early adult years. However, they decided to step back from acting and have a fashion career instead.
They currently own the luxury fashion label The Row. Meanwhile, their younger actress Elizabeth Olsen has become one of the most celebrated actresses in the last decade partially thanks to her MCU tenure.
Celebrities Who Called Quits on Acting
Despite achieving massive success at the peak of their career, some celebrities simply decided to call quits on acting and retire quietly.
Some of the well-known actors who have completely retired from acting are Phoebe Cates, Gene Hackman, Jack Nicholson, Rick Moranis, and more. While they still occasionally appear in public events, they never return back to the spotlight.
Oscar-winning actor Sir Daniel Day-Lewis also has a reputation for retiring multiple times, but he still manages to return in front of the camera including this year as it was recently confirmed that he is making his comeback in Anemone, a new movie directed by his son Ronan.
However, some stars stepped away from acting due to personal struggles. An example is former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes, who has suffered from mental health and substance abuse problems throughout the years since she retired.
