What Was in Zenitsu’s Letter in Demon Slayer Season 4?

As revealed in Demon Slayer chapter 144, titled Successors, Zenitsu’s letter brought him news about the sudden death of his master and former Thunder hashira, Jigoro Kuwajima.

According to the letter, Jigoro committed Seppuku to take responsibility for Kaigaku, who chose to become a demon and join the ranks of the upper demon moon.

In other words, Jigoro trained a thunder breathing user only to end up joining Muzan and using his abilities to cause chaos against humans.

Worse, Jigoro died alone, without a decapitator, which implies he was in excruciating pain before taking his final breath.

Zenitsu notified Kaigaku about the incident, but the latter is unconcerned because he dislikes the old guy.

Kaigaku informed Zenitsu that he had done everything he could, but Jigoro did not designate him as his sole heir. He also referred to Jigoro as a senile old man who he has no use for despite studying and training under him.

Why Did Zenitsu’s Attitude Change after Reading the Letter?

Zenitsu changed after reading the letter due to his anger toward Kaigaku. This marked the turning point in Zenitsu's character development as he decided what he needed to do for himself, his master, and Kaigaku.

The old Zenitsu, who laughed effortlessly in front of his friends but sobbed and panicked in front of the demons, vanished as if he had been reborn.

From that point forward, Zenitsu carried the legacy of his dead master to confront Kaigaku and atone for his mistakes.

Zenitsu blamed himself for what happened to Kaigaku and their parting ways. He believed it was his fault that Kaigaku left the organization and joined the demons.

He also believed his presence had made Kaigaku insecure about his abilities, especially his failure to master the first form of Thunder Breathing.

To confront Kaigaku and preserve Jigoro’s honor, Zenitsu changed his attitude toward him, refusing to show fear in front of the person he once looked up to and thought was extremely special.

Fortunately, Zenitsu's normal demeanor would return after the all-out war against Muzan.
