Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are planning to turn K-pop Demon Hunters into a massive franchise following its major success this summer.
The musical fantasy film has become the most popular Netflix animated movie of all time as it consistently shows up in the streamer's global charts worldwide ever since its release in June. Some of the songs in the soundtrack have also topped the Billboard charts and become viral on social media, especially on TikTok. With its massive success, fans are wondering what Netflix's future plans are for the film.
What is Netflix's Franchise Plan for K-pop Demon Hunters?

According to TheWrap, Netflix is planning to expand K-pop Demon Hunters into a major franchise with sequels, spin-offs, and other related projects, similar to what Disney has done with Frozen.
So far, they are eyeing two more sequels for the film (to complete the trilogy), a TV series spinoff, a stage musical, and a potential short film that will bridge the gap between the main films.
They are also considering the idea of doing a live-action remake of the film, even though the original animated version is still fresh among the audience.
Similar to what Disney has done with its animated blockbusters, Netflix has massive merchandising plans for K-pop Demon Hunters as they are selling products related to the film and are partnering with multiple brands.
However, the film's directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, have yet to sign a deal with Netflix to work on the other projects in the franchise.
What is K-pop Demon Hunters' Viewership Performance on Netflix?
During the second quarter earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos singled out K-pop Demon Hunters as "a phenomenal success out of the gate" and teased at that time that they were planning what's next for the film.
The film reached a new viewing peak in its sixth week with a massive 26.3 million views, topping the previous week (25.8 million) and the week before that (24.2 million).
By its sixth week, it also nabbed the record of "the most popular Netflix animated film of all time."
Another impressive record is that it made the Top 10 list of all countries, and is expected to enter Netflix's all-time top 10 list around next week.
