As the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards unfolded in California on September 14, one thing many noticed was that the star-studded show was missing Sofia Vergara, whose allergy update alarmed fans due to her Instagram post addressing it.

Why Was Sofia Vergara Not at the 2025 Emmys?

The 53-year-old was a no-show at the 2025 Emmys night, but for good reason. The Modern Family star was unable to attend due to an unexpected health emergency just minutes before she, too, was heading out to get to the event.

Vergara took to Instagram to post, "Didn't make it to the Emmys... but I made it to the ER. The craziest eye (allergy) right before getting in the car."

In the photos, Vergara's right eye was visibly swollen and red. In another video, she was seen rinsing her eye with water in the ER.

While she was not nominated this year, she was supposed to present the award for lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. Instead, the award was presented by Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman of The Hunting Wives, with Adolescence star Stephen Graham receiving the honor.

That being said, what really happened to Sofia Vergara's sudden eye allergy? Has she confirmed what triggered it in the first place? Here's what we know.

What Happened to Sofia Vergara's Eye?

The America's Got Talent judge has yet to disclose what really happened with her eye allergy, but we've got plenty of theories that may or may not involve the products she used before going to the show.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), eye allergies are usually caused by pollen, dust, pet dander, mould, or even makeup and skincare products.

Eye allergies are common, and they sometimes come out of the blue, which may be triggered by the environment, lifestyle, or even the season.

As per Mayo Clinic, other causes of eye allergies include everyday products such as eye makeup, eyelash glue, or facial creams that can cause irritation. Contact lenses, especially when worn too long or not cleaned properly, could be a suspect.

Either way, we would have to wait for Sofia Vergara to update before we get ahead of ourselves.
